184 out of 1,000 families in Northern Mindanao are poor

The poverty incidence among Filipino families in the Northern Mindanao as of the full year of 2023 was estimated at 18.4 percent. This means that 184 out of 1,000 families had incomes which were below the amount needed to buy their basic food and non-food needs in 2023. This was estimated at 17.3 percent in 2018 and 19.2 percent in 2021.

The poverty incidence among families in the region was observed to be higher than the national poverty incidence among families which was estimated at 10.9 percent in the full year of 2023.

However, the trend of the poverty incidence in the region mirrors the trend observed at the national level.

Compared to the national estimate from 2018, 2021, and 2023, it is noted that Northern Mindanao recorded poverty incidence among families higher than the national estimate.

In terms of magnitude or number of poor families, Northern Mindanao recorded around 227 thousand poor families in 2023. This was estimated at 228 thousand families in 2021 and 194 thousand families in 2018.

The total number of poor families at the national level in the full year of 2023 was 2.99 million families. This means that around 7.6 percent of the total poor families in the country in 2023 were in region 10.

Poverty incidence among population is at 25.3 percent

Poverty incidence among population in Northern Mindanao in 2023 was estimated at 25.3 percent. This means that in 2023, 253 out of 1,000 individuals in Region X were poor. These were individuals whose incomes were below the amount needed to buy their basic food and non-food needs. This was estimated at 23.1 percent and 26.1 percent in 2018 and 2021, respectively.

The poverty incidence among population in the region was observed to be higher than the national poverty incidence among population which was estimated at 15.5 percent in the full year of 2023.

About 1.31 million individuals in Northern Mindanao are poor

In the full year of 2023, about 1.31 million individuals in the region had income below the poverty threshold. This was estimated at 1.32 million and 1.13 million individuals in 2021 and 2018, respectively.

The total number of poor individuals at the national level in 2023 was estimated at 17.54 million. This means that around 7.5 percent of the total poor individuals in the country in the full year of 2023 were in region X.

A family of five in Northern Mindanao needs PhP 13,964 per month to meet the primary food and non-food needs

The average poverty threshold for a family of 5 was calculated at Php 13,964 per month in Northern Mindanao in 2023. This was the minimum amount needed to cover the primary food and non-food needs of a family, and those families with income below this threshold were considered to be living in poverty.

The 2023 poverty threshold was 16.2 percent higher than the poverty threshold in 2021 and 34.9 percent higher than the threshold in 2018. The 2023 poverty threshold in Northern Mindanao was higher than the national poverty threshold of PhP 13,873.

48 out of 1,000 families have insufficient income to meet their minimum basic food needs

The subsistence incidence among Filipino families in Northern Mindanao was estimated at 4.8 percent in the full year of 2023. This means that around 48 out of 1,000 Filipino families did not have sufficient income to sustain their minimum basic food needs in the full year of 2023. In the full year of 2021, the proportion of families in Northern Mindanao who were food poor was recorded at 6.2 percent while it was recorded at 3.9 percent in 2018.

The subsistence incidence among families in Northern Mindanao was observed to be higher than the subsistence incidence among families at the national level which was estimated at 2.7 percent in the full year of 2023, 3.9 percent and 3.4 percent, in 2021 and 2018, respectively.

The 4.8 percent subsistence incidence among families translates to about 59.44 thousand food poor families in Northern Mindanao in the full year of 2023. This is lower than the number of food poor families in 2021 estimated at 73.60 thousand.

The total number of food-poor families at the national level in 2023 was around 741.73 thousand, which means that around 8.0 percent of the food-poor families in the country were in Northern Mindanao.

76 out of 1,000 individuals are food poor

Among the population in Northern Mindanao, the subsistence incidence was 7.6 percent which means that around 76 out of 1,000 individuals in the region were food poor or did not have enough income to afford their basic food needs in 2023.

Similar to the subsistence incidence among families, the region’s subsistence incidence among population was higher than the national subsistence incidence of 4.3 percent for the full year of 2023.

The subsistence incidence of 7.6 percent translates to around 394.40 thousand individuals in the Northern Mindanao whose income were not sufficient to afford the minimum food needs in 2023.

The food-poor individuals in the Northern Mindanao accounted for around 8.2 percent of the 4.84 million food-poor Filipinos in the country.

A family of five needs PhP 9,676 per month to meet basic food needs

For the Food Threshold, a family of five in Northern Mindanao needed at least 9,676 pesos in 2023, on average, to meet their family’s basic food needs in a month. This is an increase of 15.4 percent from the 2021 threshold estimated at 8,385 pesos.

The food threshold for Northern Mindanao in 2023 was higher than the estimated national food threshold of PhP 9,581.
