The economy of the province of Misamis Oriental recorded a Gross Provincial Domestic Product (GPDP) of PhP 144.3 billion in 2021. This exhibited a growth of 4.0 percent, a rebound from a contraction of -11.6 percent in 2020.
Top contributors to the 4.0 percent growth of the province were: Electricity, steam, water, and waste management with a contribution of 0.8 percentage point, Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles at 0.7 percentage point, and Manufacturing and Construction both with 0.6 percentage point contribution.
In terms of share to the GPDP of the province, Manufacturing holds the largest share at 20.5 percent. Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles followed at 19.4 percent and Agriculture, forestry, and fishing at 13.1 percent. The least share was observed in Other Services and Mining and quarrying both at 0.5 percent.
In terms of growth, only Agriculture, forestry and fishing and Public administration and defense; compulsory social activities exhibited decline with -1.6 percent and -6.6 percent, respectively.
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) established through Republic Act No. 10625 or The Philippine Statistical Act of 2013, is tasked, among others, to compile and maintain macroeconomic accounts and indicators, at the national and subnational level. The Provincial Product Accounts (PPA) is a mechanism to measure the economic performance of the province or highly urbanized cities (HUCs) at a given time.
Starting last year, the PSA annually releases the provincial and HUC level economic performances following the identified pilot areas. The province of Misamis Oriental is one of the pilot areas for PPA compilation starting 2021.
