Explanatory Note

Data on marriages presented in this release were obtained from the timely and late registered marriages at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars throughout the country and submitted to the Office of the Civil Registrar General through the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Provincial Statistical Offices (PSOs). The information presented includes marriages that occurred from January to December 2022 based on data files received by the PSA - Civil Registration Service (CRS) from the PSOs and processed as of 31 July 2023. Figures presented herein are not adjusted for under registration. This release includes marriages of Filipinos whose usual residence is abroad and marriages of foreign nationals that occurred in the country during the reference period.  Marriages of Filipinos abroad which were reported to the Philippine Foreign Service Posts are presented in a separate report
 

Registered marriages up by 28 percent in 2022


A total of 23,456 marriages were registered in 2022, an increase of 28.1 percent from the total registered marriages of 18,304 in 2021. (Figure 1a and 1b) 

The crude marriage rate (CMR)1 increased to 4.6 or 5 marriages per thousand population from 3.6 marriages per thousand population in 2021.

Highest percent change was noted in years 2020-2021 for period covering years 2015-2022, while a drop of 34.3 percent was noted in years 2019-2020.

Leap years: 2012, 2016 and 2020

Registered marriages highest in Misamis Oriental 

Among the 5 provinces in Region X, Misamis Oriental (which includes Cagayan de Oro City) recorded the highest number of registered marriages in 2022 with 8,025 or 34.2 percent of the total marriages. Bukidnon recorded the second highest number of marriages with 7,660 (32.7% share) followed by Lanao del Norte which includes Iligan City with 4,021 (17.1% share). These three provinces collectively shared more than three-fourth (84%) of the total registered marriages in the region. The same provinces also reported the highest number of registered marriages in 2021.

On the other hand, the province of Camiguin had the lowest number of registered marriages in 2022 with only 360 or 1.5 percent of the total marriages in the region.

Meanwhile, the highest increase of registered marriages was observed in Misamis Oriental including Cagayan de Oro City with 34.2 percent change, from 5,978 in 2021 to 8,025 in 2022. (Figure 2)

Most marriages occurred in March

In 2022, March recorded the highest number of registered marriages with 2,909 or 12.4 percent of the total marriages in the region. The month of February ranked second with 2,855 (12.2% share), followed by the month of December with 2,354 (10.0% share). 

On the other hand, the month of November had the least number of registered marriages with 1,245 (5.3% share).

Majority of couples married between ages 25 to 29 years

Of the total number of registered marriages in the region, majority were aged at 25 to 29 years old. Around one in three men (8,310 or 35.4% share) married at these ages, and about the same proportion was observed for women (8,718 or 37.2% share).

The number of men who are over 50 years of age (796 or 3.4% share) was almost twice than the number of women of the same age group (406 or 1.7% share). (Figure 4).

In 2022, a total of 1,040 (4.4% share) marriages involved females below 20 years old. This is nearly fifth times as much as marriages involving males of the same age-group (218 or 0.9% share).

More than 90% were registered on time

Timely registration refers to registration of the marriage within 30 days from the date of celebration.

The three provinces that recorded the highest share in timely registered marriages in 2022 were Camiguin, Misamis Oriental and Misamis Occidental.

Camiguin had 100 percent registration of marriages for the year 2022. This was followed by Misamis Oriental (excluding Cagayan de Oro City) at 98.5 percent and Misamis Occidental at 95.2 percent. Lanao del Norte (excluding Iligan City) recorded the highest number of late registered births at 36.5 percent.
