Fisheries statistics were composed of three subsectors – commercial, municipal and aquaculture. Production from these subsectors were consolidated to show the condition of fisheries in the Northern Mindanao.
The total volume of fisheries production in 2018 was estimated at 152,484 metric ton, 0.02 percent down from 2017 output of 155,816 metric ton, as shown in Figure 1. All three subsectors – Commercial, Municipal and Aquaculture displayed decline growth at negative 0.04, 0.01, and 0.02 drop in production, respectively. (See Table 1)
Aquaculture contributed 48 percent with 73,026 metric ton yield followed by Municipal fishery that brought in 44,733 metric ton, 29.3 percent share to the aggregate volume of produce. Commercial fishing unloaded 34,725 metric ton that shared 23 percent in 2018.
The top five species captured and or harvested in 2018 were seaweeds with 32,180 metric ton, Indian sardines (Tamban) by 16,977 metric ton, followed by Milkfish with 16,080 metric ton, Tiger Prawn by 14,600 metric ton and Frigate tuna (Tulingan) by 9,037 metric ton, and all other species had 63,610 metric ton as shown in Figure 3.
Commercial
Commercial fishery included fishing operations in marine waters beyond 15 kilometers from the shoreline that made use of boats of more than three gross tons. The generated volume of production in commercial fisheries dropped by 0.04 percent at 34,725 metric ton as compared to 2017’s level at 36,249 metric ton.
Municipal
Municipal fishery operation was within the 15 kilometer radius from the shoreline, likely small fishing operation. It also included fishing in inland water such as rivers, lakes, dams and the like.
Municipal fisheries production posted at 44,733 metric ton during the year. As compared to 2017, the recorded production was 44,975 metric ton which was higher by 0.01 percent. The Inland fisheries production contributed an increase of 0.17 percent from last year’s production, registering at 4,490 metric ton. This subsector was composed of 90 percent catch from marine municipal fisheries and ten percent from inland fishing.
Aquaculture
The aquaculture production accounted the volume harvested from the aquafarm where the propagation of aquatic species including fish, mollusk, crustaceans and aquatic plants, for purposes of nurturing to enhance the production within the region.
Production from aquaculture fisheries reached at 73,026 metric ton that skidded 0.02 percent from previous year’s production of 74,591 metric ton.
