Explanatory Notes
Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificates of Death (Municipal Form No. 103) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars throughout the country and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority. This release shows an overview of the registered deaths that occurred from January to December 2022, including the 10 leading causes of death. Deaths of Filipinos that occurred abroad which were reported to the Philippine Foreign Service Posts are presented in a separate report. The figures shown were not adjusted for under registration

An average of 86 deaths registered per day

In 2022, a total of 31,220 deaths were registered in Region X, a decrease of 23.2 percent from 40,666 in 2021. This is equivalent to a crude death rate of 6.0, or six deaths per 1,000 population in 2022. This corresponds to an average of 86 deaths per day, which translates to 4 deaths per hour.

From the year 2015 to 2022, the year 2020-2021 has the highest increase of percent change with 53.5 percentage points from -3.5 percentage points in 2019-2020.
The number of registered deaths from 2015 to 2022 has experienced dynamic shifts in which the years 2017, 2020 and 2022 showed a decreasing trend. The increase during the eight-year period was 27.2 percent, from 24,551 in 2015 to 31,220 in 2022. (Figure 1 and Table 1)

Highest number of deaths reported in Bukidnon
The highest number of registered deaths by place of usual residence occurred in the province of Bukidnon with 8,936 (28.6% share), followed by Misamis Oriental with 6,502 (20.8% share), and Misamis Occidental with 4,939 (15.8% share). The combined share of these three provinces was 65.2 percent of the total registered deaths in 2022.

On the other hand, provinces and highly urbanized city which recorded lowest number of registered deaths were Camiguin with 709 (2.3% share), Iligan City with 2,425 (7.8% share), and Lanao del Norte with 2,981 (9.5% share). These provinces and highly urbanized city accounted for only 19.6 percent of the overall registered deaths in the region in the same year. (Figure 2a and Figure 2b).

January had the most number of deaths

In 2022, most registered deaths occurred in January at 3,164 or 10.1 percent of the total deaths in the Region. It was followed by the months of August at 2,834 (9.1% share), and September at 2,761 (8.8% share). On the other hand, the month of April had the least number of deaths at 2,312 or 7.4 percent share (Figure 3a and 3b).

More male deaths than female deaths recorded
Figure 4 shows the age-sex structure of registered deaths in 2022. It shows an inverted pyramid, with fewer deaths at the younger ages (ages 5-9 and 10-14), except for children under one, and progressively increasing as people grow older. In Region X, the number of male deaths (17, 946 or 57.5% share) was higher than female deaths (13,274 or 42.5% share) in 2022. The proportion of males who died was highest at the age of 65 to 69 years old (2,188 or 12.2% of male deaths) while for females, the largest was at the oldest age group, 85 years old and over (1,955 or 14.7% of female deaths).

The sex ratio of 135 indicates that there were about 135 male deaths for every 100 female deaths. Moreover, sex ratio of over a hundred means that more male deaths were registered compared to their female counterparts at every age group spanning 0 to 79 years. Further, higher proportions of female deaths were observed in the older age groups (80 years old and over) compared to its male counterparts. (Figure 4)

More than half of the number of deaths were attended by health care provider
Attendant refers to a private physician, public health officer, hospital authority, or any other allied health care provider who attended the deceased.

Out of 31,220 registered deaths, 16, 458 or 53% deaths were attended.
Among provinces and highly urbanized cities in Region X, only Misamis Occidental had more unattended than attended deaths. (Figure 5)

More than half of the total registered deaths occurred at home

In 2022, 17,046 or 54 percent of the total deaths, by place of occurrence, occurred at home while 14,338 or 46 percent died in any health facilities. Some (105 number of deaths) died in places other than home and health facilities, such as on the street, in public places, on board a vehicle, airplane or vessel while in transit, among others. However, a small proportion of deaths have undetermined or unspecified sites because of the missing information in the place of death or usual residence of the deceased.

The highly urbanized Cities of Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City had more deaths that occurred in health facilities than any other site of occurrence.

Highest number of infant deaths recorded in Bukidnon

Infant deaths are deaths that occurred before reaching age 1. At the regional level, 1,015 infant deaths were registered in 2022. The highest number of infant deaths were recorded in Bukidnon (369 or 36.4% share), Misamis Oriental (180 or 17.7% share), and Misamis Occidental (143 or 14.1% share).

On the other hand, Camiguin (16 or 1.6% share), Lanao del Norte (78 or 7.7% share) and Iligan City (92 or 9.1% share) had the least number of registered infant deaths. (Figure 7)

A maternal death is defined by the World Health Organization as, “the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and the site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes.’’ In 2022, a total of 83 women were identified as having died of maternal causes in the region.

Among all provinces and highly urbanized cities, Bukidnon recorded the highest number of maternal deaths with 32 (38.6% share), followed by Misamis Oriental with 14 (16.9% share), and Lanao del Norte with 10 or 12 percent share. On the other hand, Camiguin (3 or 3.6% share) and Cagayan de Oro City (7 or 8.4% share), recorded the least number of maternal deaths. (Figure 8)
