Mr. Ibrahim P. Alonto, a BS Civil Engineering student of the Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, was named the Region 10’s young statistics champion as he bested other 14 provincial winners in the Northern Mindanao Regional Championship of the 27th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) held at Mallberry Suites Business Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City last 10 November 2023.
Mr. Alonto recorded a total score of 33 out of 40 points, gaining the top rank in the Regional Championship. He received a cash prize and a PSQ-designed plaque. His coach, Mr. Pejie C. Santillan was also given a token. The school also received a Certificate of Recognition. Mr. Alonto would be the region’s representative to the National Finals which shall be held in Metro Manila on 07 December 2023. He will be competing with the other 16 regional champions.
Completing the top three regional winners of Region X were Mr. Reynaldo L. Saliot, Jr. (2nd Place) a BS Mathematics student from Central Mindanao University who garnered 30 points and Mr. Carl Josef B. Carbonilla (3rd Place) a BS Civil Engineering student who garnered 27 points from Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan. Both winners received a PSQ-designed plaque and cash prizes. The cash prizes of the regional champions were sponsored by Honorable Mayor Rolando A. Uy of Cagayan de Oro City.
Other provincial winners who joined the contest were Ella Louise D. Borja of Central Mindanao University, Jovelyn L. Paderon and John Paul S. Damuag of Tangub City Global College, Sendrilla Louise L. Dagondon and David M. Galagar of Fatima College of Camiguin, Inc., Preach Love T. Paulican of Mountain View College, Francis L. Ong of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, Jayson G. Oppus of Camiguin Polytechnic State College, Ahron G. Catada of University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines- Oroquieta, Andres John N. Calimutan, Kyle Vincent L. Salicid, and Georinah L. Velasco of MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology.
The PSQ is a nationwide search for young statistics whizzes which began in 1992 designed to test the knowledge and competence in statistics of freshmen college students. This activity is being organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority and the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc., a non-stock, non profit organization of professional statisticians from government and non-government agencies and the academe.
