Highlights of Selected Major Crops Production in Northern Mindanao (First Quarter 2020)

Table 1 shows the volume of production of selected major crops by crop group in Northern Mindanao for the first quarter of 2019 and 2020.

The total production of selected major crops in Northern Mindanao reached 3.377 million metric tons (MT) in the first quarter of 2020, a 0.4 percent growth from its production volume on the same quarter of 2019.

The total production of selected major fruit crops was registered at 872,943 MT, a 0.2 percent decrease from 874,608 MT production for the same period in 2019. Production of vegetables and root crops was recorded at 191,856 MT, equivalent to a 0.03 percent growth from 191,804 MT production posted in the same quarter of 2019. Also, production of non-food and industrial crops in the region reached 2.312 million MT, an increase of 0.7 percent from 2.295 MT production in the same period in 2019. Note that among the three crop groups, non-food and industrial crops dominated the production with 68.5 percent share to total production.

Major Fruit Crops

Table 2 presents the production of selected fruit crops in Northern Mindanao for the first Quarter of 2020 and its percent share to the total production in the country and the region.

As shown in Table 2, pineapple (55.3%) accounted for more than half of the total national production of pineapple during the first quarter of 2020. Banana ranked second with 25.4 percent share to total Philippine banana production.

Within Northern Mindanao, banana ranked first with 60.1 percent share to total production of selected fruit crops. Pineapple followed which accounted for 39.7 percent of the total selected fruit crops production in the region.

Vegetable and Root Crops

Table 3 shows the production of major vegetables and root crops in Northern Mindanao for the first Quarter of 2020 and its percent share to the total production in the country and Northern Mindanao.

Northern Mindanao production of selected vegetables and root crops accounted for almost one-fifth (18.3 %) of the corresponding production for the whole country. Among these commodities, cassava, with 173,237 MT production, accounted for the largest share (33.6%) of the total national cassava production.

Within the region, cassava (90.3%) also accounted for the biggest bulk of total production of selected vegetables and root crops.

Non-Food and Industrial Crops (NFICC)

Table 4 shows the production of selected non-food and industrial crops in Northern Mindanao for the first quarter of 2020 and its percent share to the total production in the country and Northern Mindanao.

The volume of production of selected non-food and industrial crops in Northern Mindanao for the first quarter of 2020 accounted for 14.7 percent of the corresponding total national production. Sugarcane posted the biggest production of 2.1 million MT (15.0 %), followed by coconut (13.6 %) and coffee (12.5 %).

Within the region, sugarcane accounted for 83.1 percent of the total regional production for selected non-food and industrial crops.

Major Fruit Crops Quarterly Bulletin (January-March 2020)

- The Major Fruit Crops Quarterly Bulletin provides updates on the production of banana, calamansi, mango, and pineapple. These crops are highlighted in the report on the Performance of Agriculture that the PSA releases quarterly.

Major Vegetables and Rootcrops Quarterly Bulletin (January-March 2020)

- The Major Vegetables and Rootcrops Quarterly Bulletin provides updates on production of major vegetables and rootcrops, namely, mung bean/mongo, potato, cabbage, eggplant, tomato, ampalaya fruit, onion, sweet potato, and cassava.

Major Non-Food and Industrial Crops Quarterly Bulletin (January-March 2020)

- The Major Non-Food and Industrial Crops Quarterly Bulletin provides updates on the production of major non-food and industrial crops, namely: abaca, coconut, coffee, rubber, sugarcane, and tobacco.

Crop Production

- is the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvesters’ shares, reserved etc. Excluded are those produced but not harvested due to low price, lack of demand and force majeure or fortuitous events, etc.

Industrial Crops

- are crops that are used as inputs to other industries.

Major Crops

- refers to the top 19 crops in the Philippines, other than palay and corn which collectively account for more than 60 percent of the total volume of crop production. These include coconut, sugarcane, banana, pineapple, coffee, mango, tobacco, abaca, peanut, mongo, cassava, sweet potato, tomato, garlic, onion, cabbage, eggplant, calamansi and rubber.

Non-Food Crops

- are crops other than those used for food consumption. These are crops growth for their aesthetic values such as ornamental plants and cut-flowers. These also include agriculture-derived products such as rice hay and coconut leaves.

Root Crops

- are crops with well-developed underground edible roots. They are classified into roots and tubers. Roots, which are more starchy and rich in carbohydrates, include gabi, ubi and white potato. Tubers include beets, radish, carrots and turnips.

Vegetable Crops

- are mostly temporary crops which are either classified agronomically as such or based on purpose for which they are used, like jackfruit which on its young stage, is classified as vegetable.
