The volume of fisheries production in Northern Mindanao dropped to 118,112.40 metric tons in 2021, a decline of 16.3 percent compared to 141,168.69 metric tons fisheries production in 2020. All fisheries subsector had a decrease in production for 2021 compared to 2020.
Among the subsectors, aquaculture had the biggest drop which was recorded at -21.6 percent, that is, equivalent to 15,111.87 metric tons. Commercial fisheries and municipal fisheries declined by 11.9 percent and 10.6 percent, respectively, incurring a combined loss of 7,944.43 metric tons. (Table 1)

Aquaculture had the biggest share of 46.3 percent of the total fisheries production in Region X, followed by municipal fisheries (marine and inland) at 31.6 percent, and commercial fisheries at 22.0 percent share. (Figure 1)

All provinces in the region had a drop in fisheries production except Camiguin which had a 34.5 percent increase in fisheries production, reaching 3,777.72 metric tons. The province of Bukidnon posted the largest contraction in fisheries production (-78.7%).
In terms of volume, Lanao del Norte had the biggest decline of 14,737.75 metric tons among all provinces. This was followed by Misamis Occidental (-4,305.32 MT), Misamis Oriental (-2,745.87 MT), and Bukidnon (-2,235.39 MT). (Figure 2)
By subsector
Aquaculture
For aquaculture subsector in 2021, Lanao del Norte had the biggest share of 66.7 percent or 36,472.50 metric tons, followed by Misamis Occidental at 28.8 percent. The rest of the provinces had a combined percent share of 4.6 percent.
Aquaculture fisheries production in Bukidnon, Camiguin, and Misamis Oriental increased in 2021 while Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental recorded a drop in their production. The province of Lanao del Norte posted a huge decline of 15,082.43 metric tons. The total gains in aquaculture fisheries production for the other three provinces reached 788.24 metric tons only. (Figure 3)
Commercial
For commercial fisheries, only Camiguin had an increase in production, doubling their previous year’s recorded production to reach 584.01 metric tons. Meanwhile, Lanao del Norte (-4.8%), Misamis Occidental (-17.4%), and Misamis Oriental (-18.9%) incurred losses in their commercial fisheries production.
In terms of volume, Misamis Occidental had the biggest decrease in production at 2,038.97 metric tons.
Lanao del Norte (39.9%) and Misamis Occidental (37.2%) accounted for around 77.2 percent of the commercial fisheries production while Misamis Occidental account for about 20.6 percent. (Figure 4)

Municipal
For municipal fisheries, the provinces of Camiguin (3.7%) and Lanao del Norte (6.4%) increased their production to 2,570.33 metric tons and 14,451.10 metric tons, respectively. The provinces of Bukidnon (-94.2%), Misamis Occidental (-8.9%), and Misamis Oriental (-23.8%) incurred losses in their municipal fisheries production. Bukidnon incurred the biggest loss of 2,285.62 metric tons. (Figure 5)
The provinces of Lanao de Norte (38.7%) and Misamis Occidental (39.9%) accounted for around 78.5 percent of the total municipal fisheries production in the region in 2021.

TECHNICAL NOTES
This Special Release presents the data on the volume of production of fisheries in Northern Mindanao for 2020-2021. It contains information on the fisheries subsectors, namely: commercial fisheries, municipal fisheries, and aquaculture. Data use were from the four (4) fisheries surveys regularly conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The surveys are: Quarterly Commercial Fisheries Survey (QCFS), Quarterly Municipal Fisheries Survey (QMFS), Quarterly Inland Fisheries Survey (QIFS) and Quarterly Aquaculture Survey (QAqS).
Fisheries - all activities relating to the act or business of fishing, culturing, preserving, processing, marketing, developing, conserving and managing aquatic resources and the fishery areas including the privilege to fish or take aquatic resources thereof (RA 8550).
Commercial fishing – is the catching of fish with the use of fishing boats with a capacity of more than three gross tons for trade, business or profit beyond subsistence or sports fishing.
Marine Municipal Fishing - covers fishing operation carried out with or without the use of a boat weighing three gross tons or less.
Inland Municipal Fishing - the catching of fish, crustaceans, mollusks and all other aquatic animals and plants in inland water (e.g. lakes, rivers, dams, marshes, etc.) using simple gears and fishing boats some of which are non-motorized with a capacity of three gross tons or less; or fishing not requiring the use of fishing boats.
Aquaculture - fishery operation involving all forms of raising and culturing of fish and other fishery species in marine, in fresh, brackish and marine water areas. The operation is comprised of activities from stocking to harvesting of species under controlled conditions in farming facility called aqua farm.
