The volume of production of selected major crops in Northern Mindanao reached 3.555 million metric tons (MT) in the second semester of 2020, a 3.9 percent decrease from its volume of production on the same semester of 2019. (Table 1 and Figure 1)
The total production of selected major fruit crops registered at 1.887 million MT and shows a 1.8 percent decrease from 1.921 million MT production in the same period of 2019. Vegetables and root crops recorded a production of 0.299million MT, equivalent to 6.4 percent increase from 0.281 million MT production posted in the same semester of 2019.
Also, production of non-food and industrial crops in the region reached 1.369 million MT, a decrease of 8.5 percent from 1.496 million MT production in the same period of 2019. Among the three crop groups, fruit crops dominate with 53.1 percent share to total production, followed by non-food and industrial crops at 38.5 percent.
MAJOR FRUIT CROPS
The volume of production of selected fruit crops in Northern Mindanao for the second semester of 2020 accounted for 30.0 percent of the corresponding production for the entire country. In particular, pineapple production in the region accounted for 61.2 percent of the total production of pineapple in the country. Banana ranked second with 21.7 percent share to total Philippine banana production. (Table 2)
Within Northern Mindanao, banana ranked first with 54.8 percent share to total production of selected fruit crops. Pineapple followed which accounted for 44.3 percent of the total selected fruit crops production in the region.
VEGETABLES AND ROOT CROPS
Northern Mindanao production of selected vegetables and root crops accounted for 15.2 percent of the corresponding production for the whole country. The bulk of tomato production came from Northern Mindanao with 34,861 MT, accounting for 65.1 percent of the country’s total tomato production in the second semester of 2020.
Within the region, cassava (74.5%) accounted for the biggest share of the total production of selected vegetables and root crops.
NON-FOOD AND INSDUTRIAL CROPS (NFICC)
The volume of production of selected non-food and industrial crops in Northern Mindanao for the second semester of 2020 accounted for 8.8 percent of the total non-food and industrial crops production for the entire Philippines. In particular, Region X contributed the largest bulk of tobacco production with 1,537 MT or 98.8 percent share to the country’s total tobacco production.
Within the region, coconut accounted for 71.9 percent of the total regional production for selected non-food and industrial crops, while sugarcane accounted for 27.0 percent.
