The PSQ is a nationwide search for young statistics whizzes which began in 1992. This activity is being organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority and the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc., a non-stock, non-profit organization of professional statisticians from government and non-government agencies and the academe.
A BS Mathematics student of the Northwestern Mindanao State College of Science and Technology bested other 14 provincial winners in the Northern Mindanao Regional Championships of the 26th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) held at Grand Caprice Restaurant, Limketkai, Cagayan de Oro City last 14 November 2022.
Mr. Joel Nathaniel B. Pondoc recorded a total score of 33 out of 40 points, gaining the top rank in the Regional Championship. He received a cash prize and a PSQ-designed plaque. His coach, Ms. Aljean Faye R. Pondara was also given a cash prize. The school also received a Certificate of Recognition. Mr. Pondoc would be the region`s representative to the National Finals which shall be held in Metro Manila on 06 December 2022. He will be competing with the other 16 regional champions.
Completing the top three regional winners of Region X were Ms. Jumairah Jasmine M. Macalabo (2nd Place) a BS Chemical Engineering student who garnered 31 points and Mr. Kahlil Marc H. Yagao (3rd Place) a BS Statistics student who garnered 25 points, both from MSU - Iligan Institute of Technology.
Other provincial winners who joined the contest were Ziraili Oriel B. Vidal of Mountain View College, Edrick V. Ergino and James E. Monteroso of Central Mindanao University, John Rex Zoilo S. Varquez of Camiguin Polytechnic State College - Main Campus, Liezel T. Galve and Maria Bea Venette France C. Torres of Camiguin Polytechnic State College - Catarman Campus, Germaine Phil V. Herrera of MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, Kenneth Clark A. Harry and Cletus Dave B. Hisuler of Governor Alfonso D. Tan College, Xaviery Bos E. Agsalan of St. Rita's College of Balingasag, Timothy James Acenas of Bukidnon State University Talisayan Campus, and Carl L. Achame of University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines- Claveria.
The PSQ is being conducted to assess the competency and skills of students in statistics as acquired from the secondary education curriculum and to promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics among the students.
