Highlights of Northern Mindanao Population 2020 Census of Population and Housing (2020 CPH)

The results of the 2020 Census of Population and Housing showed that the total population of Northern Mindanao as of 01 May 2020 reached 5,022,768. This accounts for about 4.61 percent of the 109,035,343 Philippine population in 2020.
The region’s population in 2020 is 333,466 higher than its population of 4.69 million in 2015; 725,445 higher than its population of 4.30 million in 2010; and 1,517,060 higher than its population of 3.51 million in 2000. (Table 1)

The population of Northern Mindanao increased by 1.46 percent annually from 2015 to 2020. This population growth rate (PGR) is slower than the PGR for the period 2010 to 2015, and even much slower than the PGR for the period 2000 to 2010. (Table 2)

Note that Region X is composed of two highly urbanized cities (HUCs), seven component cities, 84 municipalities, and 2,022 barangays.
By province, Bukidnon had the largest population (1,541,308), followed by Misamis Oriental (956,900), Lanao del Norte (722,902), and Misamis Occidental (617,333). Camiguin had the smallest population with only 92,808 persons. (Table 3)
The two highly urbanized cities of Region X, Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City, posted a population of 728,402 and 363,115, respectively.

Bukidnon was the fastest growing province in the region with an annual population growth rate (PGR) of 1.81 percent from 2015 to 2020. Misamis Oriental (1.57%) was the next fastest growing province, followed by Lanao del Norte (1.41%), and Camiguin (1.01%). Misamis Occidental was the slowest growing province with a provincial PGR of 0.53 percent. (Table 4)
Meanwhile, the City of Cagayan de Oro (1.58%) grew faster than the City of Iligan (1.23%).

Among the cities (excluding the City of Cagayan de Oro and the City of Iligan) and municipalities in the region, the City of Valencia (216,546) in Bukidnon had the largest population in 2020, followed by the City of Malaybalay (190,712) which is also in Bukidnon. Other cities/municipalities that reached the 100 thousand population were Ozamis City in Misamis Occidental, Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental, as well as Manolo Fortich, Quezon, and Maramag which are all in the province of Bukidnon. (Table 5)

Guinsiliban (6,685) in Camiguin is the least populous municipality in Region X, followed by Binuangan (7,441) in Misamis Oriental and Concepcion (9,324) in Misamis Occidental. Other municipalities with a population of less than 10,000 were Concepcion (9,324) and Don Victoriano Chiongbian (9,664) which are both in Misamis Occidental, and Sugbongcogon (9,764) in Misamis Oriental. Of the 2,022 barangays in Region X, the largest in terms of population size is Carmen (77,756), followed by Balulang (42,205) which are both in the City of Cagayan de Oro. Barangay Poblacion (40,350) in Valencia City, Bukidnon followed closely. The rest of the top ten most populous barangays in the region are all located in the City of Cagayan de Oro, except for Tubod which is in the City of Iligan (33,243). (Table 7)
