Urban population of Northern Mindanao increases by 256.2 thousand in 2020

Northern Mindanao recorded an urban population of 2,528,239, as of 01 May 2020, accounting for 50.3 percent of the 5,022,768 total population in the region. (Table 1)

This urban population is higher by 256,238 persons than the 2,272,001 urban population in 2015. This is also 1.9 percentage points higher than the 48.5 percent level of urbanization for Region 10 in 2015.

Among all regions, Northern Mindanao had the 7th biggest urban population, sharing 4.3 percent of the total urban population in 2020. (Figure 1)

Bukidnon recorded the largest urban population in Northern Mindanao

Among the provinces in Northern Mindanao, Bukidnon had the largest share of the total regional urban population at 33.1 percent, equivalent to 836,243 urban population. It was followed by the City of Cagayan de Oro with 697,611 (27.6%) urban population, Misamis Oriental with 372,762 (14.7%), and the City of Iligan with 335,490 (13.3%). (Table 2)

Note that the City of Cagayan de Oro accounted for a larger share of the total regional urban population than the City of Iligan.

City of Cagayan de Oro, City of Iligan, and Bukidnon surpass Northern Mindanao’s level of urbanization

Three of the provinces/HUCs registered levels of urbanization higher than the 50.3 percent regional level in 2020. The City of Cagayan de Oro ranked first with 95.8 percent urbanization rate, followed by the City of Iligan (92.4%), and Bukidnon (54.3%). (Table 3)

Northern Mindanao registers five more urban barangays in 2020

In 2020, Northern Mindanao recorded 336 urban barangays, accounting for 16.6 percent of the total number of barangays in the region. Five more barangays were added to the 331 urban barangays in 2015. (Table 4)

Moreover, Northern Mindanao ranked 8th highest in the number of urban barangays among the 17 regions in the country, same rank as with the Bicol Region. (Figure 2)

City of Cagayan de Oro records the highest percentage of urban barangays

The City of Cagayan de Oro had the highest percentage of urban barangays at 78.8 percent, followed by the City of Iligan at 72.7 percent, and the province of Bukidnon at 25.2 percent. These areas registered percentages of urban barangays higher than the 16.6 percent regional level in 2020. (Table 5)

On the other hand, Bukidnon recorded the highest number of urban barangays among all provinces/HUCs in Northern Mindanao, accounting for 34.8 percent of the total urban barangays in the region, equivalent to 117 urban barangays. This was followed by the City of Cagayan de Oro at 18.8 percent or 63 urban barangays, and Misamis Oriental at 18.2 percent or 61 urban barangays.
